Magnolia ISD Student Leadership Program Graduates Tomorrow’s Leaders

Merritt Coleman from Magnolia West High School and Jaycee Fraser from Magnolia High School opened the ceremony with their personal reflections of the program and how they have developed as leaders within their respective schools and the community.

The student leadership cohort honored Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens with a personalized memory book highlighting the experiences from the past year and thanked him for having the vision to create this program. The students were honored to have the opportunity to learn about leadership from local to state government as well as a professional development session with Fortune 500 business coach Dr. Kozhi Sidney Makai.

Gallery Furniture owner and Houston community business leader Jim McIngvale talked about ten success tips for life. He explained to the students, “Do what you love and your passion is no longer work. You will find joy in what you do and remember we all have setbacks. We learn from those challenges and we can either innovate or we will eventually evaporate.”

Judge Hamilton, a former school teacher and graduate of Magnolia High School, shared her stories from Veteran’s Court which she presides over. Her stories of courage and forgiveness touched the hearts of the students. They could identify with the Judge as their actions and how they treat others is what matters. This is what people will remember and what shapes leaders.

U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady shared with the audience that leaders are shaped by families and how individuals are raised. He thanked the parents who raised these future leaders as well as the commitment from Mrs. Brittany Marrs and Mr. Jeremy Day who are the faculty sponsors of the program. Brady finished his story with the importance of giving back to the community. He stated, “If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it would be to be independent, be optimistic, have faith in God and give back to the community in which you live.”

The evening concluded with the presentation of awards including commendations from Congressman Brady. The students thanked and recognized Hughes National Gas as the title sponsor of the event and the Magnolia Rotary Club.
