Magnolia ISD Graduates its First IB Diploma Class

This two-year program was implemented at both high schools in 2016. The results of the IB exams are received in July and students who earned the full IB Diploma are delivered to the campuses in September.

Sarah Venables, IB alum from Magnolia High School and who currently attends Southern Methodist University shares,“IB was where I found my voice. All it took was a little push from the IB curriculum and the support of teachers and friends I made along the way. IB has definitely had a significant impact in shaping who I am today and will be in the future. These things may seem small, but they have built up into a new strength in my character that I know will allow me to flourish and excel at SMU and beyond.”

Jeremy Day, IB Coordinator for Magnolia West shares the impact of this program, “Students that took IB exams in 2018 earned an estimated 677 college credit hours which translated to approximately $675,000 in college tuition savings and the Magnolia West IB Diploma Class of 2018 was offered over $2 million in scholarships.”

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course of study known for its rigor and learning opportunities. IB Diploma candidates have completed 6 core courses, many of which span two years, the Theory of Knowledge class, Community Activity Service (CAS) requirements, and an Extended Essay of 4,000 words.

Derek Parsons, IB Coordinator at Magnolia High says, “The depth of analysis, breadth of learning, meaningful experiences beyond the classroom, and developing independent, critical thinkers are all notable strengths of IB graduates.”

Not only does the IB Diploma Programme distinguish students in the college application process, but more importantly it prepares students to be critical thinkers with a sense of global perspective and balance as they enter college and the world beyond.”

The District is very proud of our International Baccalaureate students, both those that have completed the full diploma program and those that have elected to take specific IB courses of interest to them. Magnolia ISD is the only public school district in Montgomery County to offer the IB Diploma Program. For more information about the International Baccalaureate, please visit www.magnoliaisd.org.
