MISD Announces New Magnolia 6th Grade Principal

Magnolia ISD is proud to announce Mrs. Lisa Bertrand as the new Magnolia 6th Grade Principal. She will fill the vacancy left by former principal Tim Owen. After serving as principal for over thirteen years, Mr. Owen has accepted a position in the MISD Transportation Department as Assistant Director.

Mrs. Bertrand has been dedicated to the field of education for over 21 years. She began her educational career at Bear Branch Elementary as a paraprofessional. After three years as a paraprofessional she decided to complete her degree and become a teacher. She first taught at J.L Lyon Elementary before moving to Magnolia 6th Grade Campus where she taught English and served as the Language Arts Department Head. Mrs. Bertrand currently serves as the Curriculum Coordinator at Magnolia 6th Grade.

She and her husband Kyle have two grown sons and one granddaughter. Their sons are both graduates of Magnolia ISD, have careers in law enforcement, and continue to live in the Magnolia Community. It was through her involvement as a parent volunteer that Mrs. Bertrand first realized she enjoyed working with youth.

Mrs. Bertrand is dedicated to continuing to inspire students and supporting the community in her new role. MISD is excited to have Mrs. Bertrand on board as our district’s newest principal.

Blue Bell Ice Cream Honors Teacher of the Year

Representatives from Blue Bell Ice Cream delivered 888 ice cream sandwiches to the students and staff of Smith Elementary School on Thursday to honor the achievements of 5th grade teacher Dion Rivera. Dion was recently named the Texas Region 6 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Blue Bell Ice Cream recognizes the outstanding achievements and dedication of teachers and was proud to recognize Dion in front of her students and fellow teachers. Smith Elementary would like to thank Blue Bell for the delicious ice cream!

Road Closure in City of Magnolia

The City of Magnolia and Magnolia ISD are preparing motorists for a traffic switch from the Texas Department of Transportation scheduled for September 18 - October 4. The details of the closure of FM 1774 between FM 1488 and Buddy Riley Rd. in Magnolia can be found by clicking the headline above. Please make plans for delays in travel times to and from school.

2014 Magnolia ISD Livestock Show September 19th & 20th

The annual Magnolia ISD Livestock Show will be held on September 19th and 20th, 2014 at Magnolia High School Ag Show Barn on 1488. FFA and 4H members are given the opportunity to purchase, raise and show an animal for the annual show including Market Steers, Hogs, Sheep, Goats, Broilers, Rabbits and Turkeys. Students then work with those animals during the school year and summer while balancing their responsibilities, school, work, family, etc… Students return to the Magnolia ISD Livestock Show to show and sell their animals. The net profits from the sale of the animal are the students’ to keep. Many students invest their money into a new animal project or into a college education. Students Honored at September School Board Meeting

Hannah Hopkins, Senior at ALPHA Academy, and Rocky Carroll, Senior at MWHS, were honored at the MISD September School Board meeting as Secondary Students of the Month. These outstanding seniors have numerous accolades between the two of them, and are great examples of the type of student Magnolia ISD strives to develop. MWHS Twirler Named 2014 Texas State Outstanding Performer

At the September MISD School Board meeting, Emily Perkins was recognized for outstanding achievements as a solo twirler. Emily competed recently at the 2014 Texas State Solo-Ensemble Twirling Contest and received top honors for her performance. Emily is currently ranked in the top 15 twirlers world-wide, and will compete at the national level. You can see Emily perform on Friday nights during half-time of the Mustang football games. Lane Closures at FM1488 and FM1774

Magnolia ISD administration would like to inform parents and students that road construction at the intersection of FM1488 and FM1774 will cause some traffic lanes to be closed beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2014. The construction is expected to last several days. Parents and students are urged to avoid the area or leave early if necessary to pass through that intersection. School buses may be delayed for morning and afternoon commutes. Please plan accordingly. Thank you.

August School Board Meeting Brings Good News!

During the August School Board Meeting, board members voted to approve the 2014-2015 budget, which included a 4% pay raise for all MISD employees. The budget also includes the return of a local leave day to all employees and an increase in the salary for beginning teachers. The MISD School Board was able to approve these benefits while balancing the budget and reducing the MISD tax rate by 1 cent.

Dion Rivera Named Region 6 Elementary Teacher of the Year

On Friday, August 15th, Smith Elementary School teacher Dion Rivera was surprised during the annual Magnolia ISD Convocation. After giving the traditional inspirational speech to the crowd of MISD teachers, the 2013-14 teacher of the year was presented with another honor. Michael Holland, Region 6 Executive Director and former Magnolia ISD Superintendent, was on hand to announce that Ms. Rivera had been selected from a field of 150 teachers as the Region 6 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Dion will now travel to Austin to compete with all 20 Education Regions for the title of Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year. Dion is a fifth grade teacher at Smith Elementary School. Congratulations to Dion on this amazing accomplishment!

Magnolia ISD Teachers & Staff Begin 2014-15 School Year!

The new year has begun for the teachers and staff of Magnolia ISD! On Friday, August 15th, over 1,500 employees returned to work and gathered at Magnolia High School for our annual Welcome Back Breakfast and Convocation. Chick-Fil-A provided breakfast for our staff, and the school board members encouraged our teachers as they prepare for the first day of school. Incoming Kindergartener, Cooper Doty, proudly held the candle of knowledge, which was passed on from administrators. Spirits ran high at the high school, and it was clear to see that all MISD employees are ready to begin a new school year!
