English Language Arts
We believe that effective elementary literacy instruction is rooted in an evidence-based approach that emphasizes explicit and systematic teaching of all essential components of reading and writing. This includes foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and spelling, along with vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and written expression. Instruction is aligned with the science of reading research and guided by the Gradual Release of Responsibility framework to scaffold learning and build student independence. Daily opportunities for students to read, write, speak, listen, and collaborate are essential, as are rigorous, relevant tasks and higher-level questioning that promote deep thinking. All students have the opportunity for small group instruction, driven by data, ensuring targeted support that meets each student's individual needs.

The mission of the Secondary Reading Language Arts Department at Magnolia Independent School District is to foster effective communication and a quest for knowledge through active reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking so that students will be responsible contributors to a diverse and changing world. Students will strive for effective communication by learning and responding in multiple genres, utilizing technology in authentic environments and applying critical thinking skills to new situations as they continually learn about the diverse world around them.
