Bauer is receiving his drone wings from his grandfather, an Air Force veteran.

On November 7th, Magnolia High School Junior Trace Bauer, a Cadet Chief Petty Officer and platoon commander in Magnolia ISD’s Navy JROTC program, achieved a groundbreaking milestone. Trace became the first NJROTC cadet to qualify for his JROTC Drone Pilot Wings after earning a Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 of the FAA’s Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Rule. This prestigious recognition was presented by NJROTC Area 17 Manager, Mr. Lamar Johnson, during the battalion’s Annual Military Inspection (AMI) at Magnolia High School. Trace received his wings from his grandfather, an Air Force veteran who has significantly influenced his decisions to earn his drone wings and apply to the Air Force Academy.

Trace’s journey to this achievement began two years ago when he joined the Civil Air Patrol’s Delta Composite Squadron SWRTX-334. Since then, he has earned his Pre-Solo Qualification, gained hands-on drone experience at the NJROTC Leadership Academy at Camp Shelby, MS, and devoted over 50 hours to rigorous study in preparation for the FAA exam. His efforts have paid off—not only has he earned the honor of wearing his drone wings, but his FAA-107 certificate also enables him to fly commercial 55-pound payloads up to 400 feet and even earn income from his skills.

Trace’s passion for aviation continues to fuel his dreams. He plans to pursue an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) after graduating next year, with aspirations to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering, commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, and begin a career as an Air Force pilot.

Congratulations, Cadet Chief Bauer, on this incredible accomplishment! Your determination and ambition inspire us all. We look forward to seeing your future take flight—Aim High!
